Recently, it seems I have only been using one type of media and that media is Google. I use it for e-mail and as my search engine for just about anything. All I have been doing for the last ten days is research for presentations, papers, and speeches. Then I check my mail to look for updates from my classmates and professors. Anyway I find myself on Google often, and it does work really well for what I use it for, so I imagine I will continue to use it in the future.
I also find it interesting that the University uses it for their email for all their students. As a student, we are kind of influenced to use Google over the other choices we have as a search engine. I wonder if the University is given some "resources" for advertising Google products.
The questions I chose are:
#1- Who paid for the Ad?
Google is a company of it's own. It pays it's employee from revenue of the money they make which is millions of dollars a year. The advertisers of the featured Ad's within the Goggle site are paid for privately by the company.
#2- Why does the company need to do the Ad?
Every company needs to Advertise there products. Google is in a cool gray area where they Advertise on there site different products, or they could host sites and get paid for doing so, however, they then in turn get to Advertise their company through that site or Advertisement. If they didn't Advertise then people wouldn't know about the company and the company would become mess important and eventually be forgotten.
#3- Who is targeted by the Ad?
Consumers are targeted, people who need quick, accurate, reliable information are also targeted. I believe younger people are more likely to feel the advertising "push" but I think Google is just putting information out there. Obviously, Google host many companies I guess you could say. When I bought my phone the Google logo was on my phone and it was used as the Search Engine, the University uses g mail, blogger, Google docs, among other things. I think it has become an extension of services used by the University.
#8- What types of persuasions are used?
Association- Google always associated itself with successful things. Perfect example is associating itself with the University and Android phone as well as the I phone.
Simple Solution- Everyone wants information quickly to solve their problems and Goggle promises that. I think this is one of their strongest persuasion techniques.
#14- Is it closer to fantasy or reality?
I believe it is closer to reality, people need information and Google provides that. The information shared is real evidence about a product and it is often supported by other people.
#15- Does it use stereotypes?
I don't believe so, that is why the company is so successful, everyone uses it. Young, Old, Black , White, Educated, Americans, Europeans, you name everyone uses it.
#16- In what ways does it depict a lifestyle that is healthy or unhealthy?
It could be both, sometimes people look up unhealthy things, but that is to be expected for any product. For the most part, Google helps people become more educated about the world around them. IT helps them broaden their scope of understanding the world around them. It makes life and research a little easier, too. It also encourages acceptance of the different lifestyles, races and ethnicity around the world by not stereotyping. So I believe it depicts a healthy lifestyle.
Everyone today uses or has used Google, and I extremely confident in saying that. Hopefully this blog helps you understand the mechanics of the site, I know it helped me slow down to actually look at the power it has in advertising. It's so subtle it's almost missed.
